Vic Roads
Benjamin Tollady Design helped Bullseye refresh the VicRoads website, and re-organise the home page content to better serve their users.
VicRoads is the Victorian Government’s infrastructure, road and transport body. They manage the Victorian arterial road network and its use as an integral part of the overall transport system. It employs approximately 2700 staff to work in partnership with other government agencies, local government and the private sector to provide road, registration and licensing services throughout Victoria.
A study conducted in June 2007 suggested that the number of customers visiting the VicRoads website had dramatically increased in recent years, with most using it to research registration and licensing information. Despite this increase in traffic however, the site’s interface was tired and it was felt that certain pages including the homepage could be better organised in terms of layout and priority of content. A full site overhaul was planned but we were asked to conduct an ‘interim’ redesign in order to better serve their customers in the short-term.
First off we poured over research papers and website logs to ascertain who was coming to the VicRoads site and what they were looking for. Once we had a good idea of the users’ needs we then consulted with the business to understand their needs and priorities for the redesign too.
With our brief in place, BTD began to produce wireframe designs of key pages across the VicRoads site, re-organising the positioning and heirarchy of content within each page as much as possible within the constraints of the existing back-end system, before working them into full template designs. These were then built using standards-compliant XHTML & CSS and applied across the VicRoads website.
Given the large numbers and diversity of the audience that the VicRoads site has particular attention was paid to accessibility across the redesign, ensuring that pages were cleanly coded, text scaled well and that colour contrast levels were sufficient.
